New Kenji Brand Development

New Kenji Brand Development

Who is New Kenji?

New Kenji is a premium sushi rice brand celebrated for its authenticity, quality, and craftsmanship. Founded in collaboration with expert Japanese chefs, the brand perfected the balance of texture, stickiness, and natural sweetness that defines exceptional sushi rice. Since its official launch in 2014, New Kenji has earned a reputation for empowering both home cooks and professionals to create restaurant-quality Japanese dishes with ease.

Despite a strong product and loyal following, New Kenji’s visual identity has lacked cohesion across packaging and digital platforms. As global interest in Japanese cuisine continues to rise, there is an opportunity to refine and unify the brand’s story — ensuring it resonates with modern audiences while staying true to its heritage.

Paladin Marketing’s proposal builds on New Kenji’s existing strengths to create a clear, recognisable, and cohesive design system. Through strategic storytelling and contemporary design, the refreshed identity aims to elevate brand perception, strengthen digital presence, and drive lasting consumer engagement.

The New Kenji rebrand balances authenticity with modernity, ensuring respectful representation of Japanese culture without leaning on clichés. The existing logo carries strong cultural cues, and the wider identity complements rather than competes, focusing on clean, contemporary design and subtle storytelling. The creative approach places the product at the heart of the narrative, highlighting premium rice quality and craftsmanship. Refined visual elements, minimal graphics, and soft textural motifs convey heritage without overstatement. Through consistency across packaging, digital, and social platforms, the refreshed identity achieves a unified expression that feels premium, relevant, and true to New Kenji’s Japanese roots.

The New Kenji identity draws from iconic Japanese symbolism to balance heritage, meaning, and charm. The red-crowned crane, a centuries-old emblem of elegance, longevity, and good fortune, reinforces the brand’s premium yet approachable character. Alongside it, playful motifs like the kappa, a mischievous water spirit stealing rice grains, and the Java sparrow, a small bird symbolising vitality and community, add warmth, humour, and memorability. Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, further deepens the narrative with themes of abundance and positivity. Together, these symbols create a culturally rich, contemporary identity that celebrates Japan’s spirit through authenticity and joyful storytelling.
